AI that earns its place

There's a lot of hype right now, and plenty of AI features that exist only so a landing page can say "powered by AI." I don't build those. Before I write a line of code, I want to know the specific job an AI feature is doing for your users — the question it answers, the manual step it removes, the thing that's slow or expensive today. If a normal form, a filter, or a search box would do the job better, I'll tell you. After 20+ years shipping software, I've learned that the feature you skip is often worth more than the one you add.

How I approach it

Good AI features are an engineering problem, not a magic trick. I start by picking the right model for the job — I work with Claude and modern LLMs every day, and the cheapest model that clears the bar usually wins. From there it's the unglamorous work that makes the difference: clear guardrails so the feature stays on-task and can't be talked into nonsense, evaluation so you can measure whether answers are actually good before you ship, and careful attention to token costs so a feature that looks great in a demo doesn't quietly wreck your margins at scale.

Fitting into your product

Most of the time AI isn't a new product — it's a feature inside one you already have. I plug into your existing codebase, data, and auth, and build the AI piece so it feels native rather than bolted on. If you're starting from scratch, I can build the whole thing end to end, from the interface to the backend to the model layer, since I own the full stack. Either way you get one person accountable for the result, not a hand-off between a "prompt person" and an engineer.
